Space Debauchery: Behind The Scenes
Space Debauchery, released on Lost Space Records, is a spacey and psychedelic song written in C Major with a focus on weird sounds and 808 kicks. The genre subcategory it falls under is somewhere between space bass and brostep. It has a 'thuggish' feel to it, as I wanted this song to be something that alien mobsters would listen to in their spaceship. I used some formant filter basses to add to the alien aesthetic as well as some wobble basses. I also enjoy 8-bit or "pixel" sounds, and included some of these sounds as melodic and support elements. I also used a low brass layer to give some of the melodic sections a bit of extra weight. I made some world building phrases at the beginning and end of the song to indicate departure and arrival.
I made this song in FL Studio, my main DAW, and wanted the basses to be weird, grimy, and gritty. I used the Manipulator plugin (made in collaboration by Polyverse and Infected Mushroom) as well as general Serum plugin settings to make several sounds change throughout the song. Some changes are more subtle like the basses throughout the drops, while others are fairly obvious like the melody warping for the second buildup. I used Ozone to assist with mastering and packed some distortion into the song to give it a heavier feel. I particularly enjoy the breakdown after the first drop going into the spacious second buildup. Inspirations for this song include LSDream, Liquid Stranger, and DirtySnatcha.
This song is actually the fourth song in the overarching story that is Artificial Reality, my debut album. I will make an animated music video for it in Blender, just like the others. In order to save on production time, I will be leaning heavily into the Blenderkit library of premade assets. In order to remain consistent with quality, I will also continue using EEVEE at 24 fps for the renders.
In the music video, Psidemica the alien cyborg approaches and enters a spaceship. This is the voice you hear in the song, the ships' computer. After a launch sequence, Psidemica leaves his current planet and enters the expansive, beautiful, and haunting void that is space. He cruises for a while around his current star system before engaging the hyperdrive and navigating witch-space to travel to a distant star system. Once there, the destination planet is located, and an approach sequence is initiated. The video ends with a rather rough landing on this planet, after which Psidemica emerges, ready to continue his quest.
